In 2015, Spotify gave me year-end statistics about my listening— I had listened to 56.5 days of music that year. The year after, I tried to top that— logging 82 days of music; 1,968 hours.

I knew that this natural proclivity to devour music constantly might mix well with my experience directing short films and make for truly unique music videos. What I did not expect was that my taste would bring me toward niche artists pushing their genres forward and that these artists actually didn’t have all of the resources they needed to create fresh, forward-thinking visual representations of their songs.

It makes me wonder if those 1,968 hours, wherever I was listening, were training my ear– the A&R that would bring amazing musicians, great collaborations, and strong friendships into my life.

I trust my ear and only work with artists who I actually listen to.
